Fenix TK35 Flashlight Comparison – 900 lumens vs 860 lumens
About a month ago, flashlight maker Fenix debuted a 900 lumen version of their very popular Fenix TK35 flashlight. The newest version of the TK35 uses a Cree XM-L2 U2 LED to produce 900 lumens in the turbo mode. The previous version, which used a Cree XM-L U2 LED, produce 860 lumens in the turbo mode. Let’s take a quick look at the specifications between models:

Output: 900-15 lumens
Run time: 1.75-140 hours
Battery type: 2 x 18650 lithium-ion rechargeable or 4 x CR123 lithium
Beam distance: 1,246 feet (380 meters)
Peak beam intensity: 36,100 candela
Fenix TK35 Flashlight – Cree XM-L U2 Model
Output: 860-15 lumens
Run time: 1.62 hours-130 hours
Battery type: 2 x 18650 lithium-ion rechargeable or 4 x CR123 lithium
Beam distance: 1,115 feet (340 meters)
Peak beam intensity: 29,000 candela
So it looks like the Cree XM-L2 U2 LED gives you more intensity (higher candela rating), longer beam distance, and slightly longer run times. The biggest difference we noticed between the two models was in the tint of the LED. The 860 lumen Fenix TK35 seemed to have a more purple tint, whereas the 900 lumen TK35 seems to have a whiter tint. The neutral white beam definitely makes things look more natural, and the improved spill light is nice for lighting up your immediate area. One thing to consider is that the Fenix TK35 Ultimate Edition doesn’t throw a beam as far as the original Fenix TK35 – 793 feet vs 1,246 feet. So if you are primarily interested in distance lighting, this may not be the flashlight for you.
